Mont-Saint-Michel: Tour or DIY?
The train route works: TGV to Rennes, then a Keolis shuttle bus to the island. The shuttle runs regularly. DIY is cheap (€60–80 return all in) and gives you total flexibility. The tour advantage is transport convenience, a guided abbey visit, and — on some tours — a cider-tasting stop in the Normandy countryside on the way back.

The tide matters more than people realise. Mont-Saint-Michel is a tidal island. At high tide the causeway walkway is submerged and you can only reach the island by shuttle boat. At low tide you can walk the causeway. Check the tide table before you go — and if you have the chance to see the island from the bay at high tide, it's a different experience entirely.

Mont-Saint-Michel is smaller than it looks in photos. The island is about 300 metres across at its widest. The abbey is the main event — a Benedictine monastery founded in 966, layered through Romanesque and Gothic rebuilding over centuries.
Allow 3–4 hours on the island. The abbey requires a guided tour (included with entry) — you can't just wander the interior unsupervised. The rest of the island is walkable in 20 minutes. The causeway walkway at low tide is worth doing. The views from the abbey terrace are the reward for climbing the full stairway from the base.
